One Battery. Two Decades: Power that Refuses to Quit

In 2006, Russ Luft, a retired U.S. Postal worker, military veteran and an avid motorcycle enthusiast from Alaska, was in the market for a battery that could withstand the frigid temperatures of the state’s terrain without impacting performance. He was introduced to ODYSSEY® batteries, and almost 20 years later – the ODYSSEY® PC925 battery model he purchased is still in great condition and fully operational. In addition to helping to power his 2000 Harley-Davidson® Electra Glide motorcycle, which Luft opted to turn into a trike to add more storage space and use it as his daily means of transportation, the battery also proved dependable as the main power source for his 2023 Gulf Stream Coach® travel trailer. Not only was the battery able to power up the trailer and help keep all the onboard accessories in operation, which included a TV, but it also performed after hours when the generators were turned off.

“I honestly never expected the battery to last this long,” said Luft. “I initially installed it into my motorcycle to get me back and forth from work every day – sometimes through heavy snow, sleet and in temperatures as low as -27°F (-33°C) – and it never let me down. In the first year alone, I put over 6,000 miles on that bike and every time I went to start the bike it fired right up for me. I also enjoy clay shooting and fishing in my spare time, so at one point, I decided to test the battery in my camper and to my amazement, it performed without fail. It’s the battery’s cold cranking amps that I’ve really come to depend on and its ability to deliver that initial burst of energy in five seconds or less.”

Luft quips that at one point, he even had an issue with an old 1998 Nissan® pickup truck, and he used the ODYSSEY® PC925 battery to jump the vehicle and get it back up and running again.

“I’ve tried other batteries before, and nothing comes close in terms of reliability, performance and value,” continued Luft. “In my younger years while I was in the Navy, I worked at a battery shop, so I am pretty familiar with the different chemistries and what they have to offer. I know that maintenance is also key to a healthy battery and one of the other attributes I like most about the ODYSSEY® battery is that it’s maintenance-free so all I really needed to do to keep it in optimal condition was to make sure it was charged properly and then the battery did the rest of the work for me.”

Luft is such a strong advocate of ODYSSEY® batteries that over the years he’s invested in three more models to power his other larger Harley-Davidson® motorcycles, which include a 2003 Harley-Davidson® Super Glide motorcycle and a 2007 Harley-Davidson® Road Glide motorcycle. He’s also referred ODYSSEY® batteries to all his friends and even convinced a few passionate bikers like himself to make the switch instead of using a stock battery design.

ODYSSEY® batteries from EnerSys are engineered to help deliver up to twice the power and three times the life of conventional flooded lead acid battery models and the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) to help start the engine as well as the high cycle life capacity to power all the onboard accessories. Featuring exclusive AGM2 technology – the latest in Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) power combined with proprietary Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology – ODYSSEY® batteries offer 400 charge/recharge cycles at 80 percent Depth of Discharge (DOD) for extended cycle life and massive starting power with engine cranking pulses up to 2700 amps for 5 seconds. Maintenance-free, these dual-purpose batteries are optimized to operate in temperatures as low as -40oF (-40oC) to as high as 176ºF (80ºC) and can recharge to 100 percent in as little as four to six hours.
